Lord Turnbull in British House of Lords: Climategate Disturbing

Extract from speech by Lord Turnbull in the House of Lords 8 December, 2009.

“There is the issue of the science, which I had previously taken as given; but many people’s faith is being tested. We are often told that the science is settled. I suppose that is what the Inquisition said to Galileo. If so, why are we spending millions of pounds on research? The science is far from settled. There are major controversies not just about the contribution of CO2, on which most of the debate is focused, but about the influence of other factors such as water vapour, or clouds-the most powerful greenhouse gas-ocean currents and the sun, together with feedback effects which can be negative as well as positive.

Worse still, there are even controversies about the basic data on temperature. The series going back one, 10 or 100,000 years are, in the genuine sense of the word, synthetic. They are not direct observations but are melded together from proxies such as ice cores, ocean sediments and tree rings.

Given the extent to which the outcome is affected by the statistical techniques and the weightings applied by individual researchers, it is essential that the work is done as transparently as possible, with the greatest scope for challenge. That is why the disclosure of documents and e-mails from the Climatic Research Unit is so disturbing. Instead of an open debate, a picture is emerging of selective use of data, efforts to silence critics, and particularly a refusal to share data and methodologies.”

Climategate is now being raised and taken seriously. Why is the IPCC now not holding an investigation into the matter as it originally promised?

Eat My Carbon

What do the carbon elite travel in when they want to get around in Copenhagen? Do they:

1. Walk
2. Cycle
3. Catch the free bus provided specially for them, or
4. Take a limo?

If you guessed "4 Take a Limo" give yourself a pat on the back.

Interesting isn't it when people tell you "don't do as I do, do as I say." If the world truely were under threat there would be no limo transport at Cop15, seaside mansions would sell for a song and people would stop bringing children into a doomed world. Unless of course they don't truely believe what is being preached. See the examples on this blog of predictions ranging from catostrphic consequences, 75 metre flooding within 20 years and the extinction of the human race. I am sorry but even if man made global warming is occuring none of those things are going to happen. People who believe this do have issues, but they are not climate issues.

In other news, forecasters predict weather tomorrow.

Extinction of Human Race Forecast by Deutsche Banker Kevin Parker

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The crystal ballers are at it again. Mr Kevin Parker is Global Head of Deutsche Bank Asset Management which is responsible for over $500 billion in assets globally. He’s not a scientist but his public prediction published in the New York Times is just too good to let go, what with it being such a slow news day today for global spontaneous combustion and the like.
“People often ask about the costs,” said Kevin Parker, the global head of Deutsche Bank Asset Management, who tracks climate policy for the bank. “But the figures people tend to cite don’t take into account conservation and efficiency measures that are easily available. And they don’t look at the cost of inaction, which is the extinction of the human race. Period.”
Period! You got that – nil chance of being wrong, no qualification to his extinction of the human race due to man made global warming predication. The answer is obvious to Kevin, spend trillions of dollars in the next few (US45 trillion to be precise) decades (managed of course by banks) or die!

Kevin wasn't so certain of the extinction of the human species in a speech he gave at the World Future Energy Summit in January this year in Abu Dhabi. Ten months ago he only thought catostrophy was a potential outcome of us reaching a "tipping point". He must have some new information that exctinction is going to inevitably result now.

I’d love to get a commission on that $US45 trillion deal. It’s a no brainer really. Where do I sign up? No doubt Kevin rides a bike to work. Only a hypocrite would want to be responsible for the extinction of the entire human species.

Open Letter to Sec Gen of UN by 141 Scientists Asking For Convincing Evidence

This one is rather long. Click on read me below to see the text of the letter and the 140 scientists that signed. This was obtained form the Copenhagen Climate Challenge website. Open Letter to Secretary-General of United Nations

His Excellency Ban Ki Moon

Secretary-General, United Nations

New York, NY

United States of America

8 December 2009

Dear Secretary-General,

Climate change science is in a period of ‘negative discovery’ - the more we learn about this exceptionally complex and rapidly evolving field the more we realize how little we know. Truly, the science is NOT settled.

Therefore, there is no sound reason to impose expensive and restrictive public policy decisions on the peoples of the Earth without first providing convincing evidence that human activities are causing dangerous climate change beyond that resulting from natural causes. Before any precipitate action is taken, we must have solid observational data demonstrating that recent changes in climate differ substantially from changes observed in the past and are well in excess of normal variations caused by solar cycles, ocean currents, changes in the Earth's orbital parameters and other natural phenomena.

We the undersigned, being qualified in climate-related scientific disciplines, challenge the UNFCCC and supporters of the United Nations Climate Change Conference to produce convincing OBSERVATIONAL EVIDENCE for their claims of dangerous human-caused global warming and other changes in climate. Projections of possible future scenarios from unproven computer models of climate are not acceptable substitutes for real world data obtained through unbiased and rigorous scientific investigation.

Specifically, we challenge supporters of the hypothesis of dangerous human-caused climate change to demonstrate that:

1.Variations in global climate in the last hundred years are significantly outside the natural range experienced in previous centuries;

2.Humanity’s emissions of carbon dioxide and other ‘greenhouse gases’ (GHG) are having a dangerous impact on global climate;
3.Computer-based models can meaningfully replicate the impact of all of the natural factors that may significantly influence climate;
4.Sea levels are rising dangerously at a rate that has accelerated with increasing human GHG emissions, thereby threatening small islands and coastal communities;
5.The incidence of malaria is increasing due to recent climate changes;
6.Human society and natural ecosystems cannot adapt to foreseeable climate change as they have done in the past;
7.Worldwide glacier retreat, and sea ice melting in Polar Regions , is unusual and related to increases in human GHG emissions;
8.Polar bears and other Arctic and Antarctic wildlife are unable to adapt to anticipated local climate change effects, independent of the causes of those changes;
9.Hurricanes, other tropical cyclones and associated extreme weather events are increasing in severity and frequency;
10.Data recorded by ground-based stations are a reliable indicator of surface temperature trends.

It is not the responsibility of ‘climate realist’ scientists to prove that dangerous human-caused climate change is not happening. Rather, it is those who propose that it is, and promote the allocation of massive investments to solve the supposed ‘problem’, who have the obligation to convincingly demonstrate that recent climate change is not of mostly natural origin and, if we do nothing, catastrophic change will ensue. To date, this they have utterly failed to do so.

Those of you following the Smoking Gun at Darwin Zero post (from Watts Up With That web site) I made yesterday will have already noted that it is essential in order to scrutinise the data feeding into the IPCC and CRU climate models that we have access to the raw data, the adjustments to that raw data, and the reasons for the adjustments which I will assume have been documented in a professional and reproducible manner as all good scientists would do without question. We hear climate alarmists saying that yes the Climategate scientists at the CRU destroyed emails, and hid from Freedom of information Acts, messed with proxies, and fought to keep other scientists’ papers out of the journals … but that doesn’t affect the data, the data is still good. Well Willis Esenbach’s research shown over on Watts Up With That casts serious doubt on that belief.

Just out of interest I decided to plot the raw temperature data for my home city of Brisbane, Australia from the GISS (ie the raw GHCN data) against the homogenized or adjusted GISS GHCN data. The temperature sensor is located at the Brisbane Eagle Farm Airport which is now our busy main international airport. The data used is the series available from 1950 to 2008. I have animated the result to highlight the difference.

As you can see the raw data shows a downward trend of about -0.6 C per century. The adjusted data however shows an opposite trend of +0.6 C per century. Intuitively as the airport grew from a quiet strip to a busy international jet airport one would think the more recent data would be adjusted downwards for the heat island effect. Instead we see that the data prior to 1978 is adjusted down and the data in recent times was adjusted up. This is why it is essential that the relevant scientists disclose the reasons for each adjustment - the entire warming trend in the Brisbane data is due to the adjustments as the raw data clearly shows a cooling trend. Without being able to check the veracity of the adjustments used the trend cannot be relied upon. Our default position must be that until all data is made available to other scientists to scrutinize and test the data temperature data used to derive the graphs and models used by the IPCC is not to be relied upon for climate modeling or policy making. Now that the cat is out of the bag failure by the data keepers to disclose this data is in direct contravention to UN scientific procedures and indicates that the data has not been dealt with either in a competent or an honest manner.

Below are the individual plots of the Brisbane temperature anomaly used to construct the animation appearing above. All data was downloaded from the GISS website on 9 Dec 2009.

Darwin Temperature Data Adjustments

Jo Nova writes,

“If Darwin had some freak local conditions, then we would expect to see the raw data in graphs from other top-end towns as trending much higher. Here are the graphs for Wyndham, Derby, Halls Creek and Broome. The graphs are from WA Climate Net, an excellent data set. Direct, Broome is 1100 km from Darwin, or 690 miles. (By road, it’s 1876 km from Darwin). (Thanks to MapCrow for the distances). I thought I would post these graphs to give people a rough idea of the historical warming across the far tropical north of Australia.”

Jo Nova has quickly released her analysis of Willis Echenbach’s scoop on unexplained adjustments made to the historical temperature data for a key data set used by the IPCC to produce a warming trend. Read the details and examine the data plots on Jo Nova’s website as it raises some very interesting questions about the integrity of data and how it is “processed.” This could be settled very quickly if the IPCC and CRU released its data explaining the justifications to the actual temperature measurements recorded in Darwin over the last century. Somehow I think that we will have a very long wait.

The Smoking Gun At Darwin Zero by Willis Eschenbach

An interesting piece of work has been posted over on the Whats Up With That site with respect to adjustments made to Darwin data by GISS which was used vy the CRU and the IPCC. For the link to the article and my comments thereon please click Read More below. This article is absolutely essential reading and its importance cannot be overstated! Please read it carefully.

The link to the original article and comments is found here. My comments on this article follow.

The lack of transparency is the problem. The adjustments should be completely disclosed for all stations including reasons for those adjustments. You have to be careful drawing conclusions without knowing why the adjustments were made. It certainly looks suspicious. In Torok, S. and Nicholls, N., 1996, An historical temperature record for Australia. Aust. Met. Mag. 45, 251-260 which I think was the first paper developing a “High Quality” (not sure that is how I would personally describe it given the Australian data and station history but moving along…) one example of adjustments is given for 224 stations used in that paper and they are for Mildura. The adjustments and reasons (see p.257):

<1989 -0.6 Move to higher, clearer ground

<1946 -0.9 Move from Post Office to Airport

<1939 +0.4 New screen

<1930 +0.3 Move from park to Post Office

1943 +1.0 Pile of dirt near screen during construction of air-raid shelter

1903 +1.5 Temporary site one mile east

1902 -1.0 Problems with shelter

1901 -0.5 Problems with shelter

1900 -0.5 Problems with shelter

1892 +1.0 Temporary site

1890 -1.0 Detect

“Detect” refers to use of the Detect program (see paper). The “<” symbol indicates that the adjustment was made to all years prior to the indicated year. The above gives an idea of the type of adjustments used in that paper and the number of adjustments made to data. For the 224 candidate stations 2,812 adjustments were made in total. A couple of points, the adjustments are subjective by their very nature. Use of overlapping multi station data can assist. I have concerns about the size of the errors these multiple adjustments introduce but I am certainly no expert. I wonder what the error bar is on the final plot when we are talking of average warming in the tenths of a degree C over a century. The stations really never were designed to provide the data that it is being used for but that is well known. My point is without the detailed station metadata it might be too early to draw a conclusion. This is why we need to know what were the adjustments made to each station and the reasons. Surely this data exists (if it doesn’t then the entire adjusted data series is useless as it can’t be scrutinised by other scientists – maybe they did a CRU with it!?) and if they do why are they not made public or at the very least made available to researchers. Have the data keepers been asked for this? I am assuming they have.

Since writing that I see that the IPCC adjusted their data from a -0.7C downward trend per century for Darwin to +6C upward trend per century! There could be no possible reasonable explanation for such an "adjustment". It will be very interesting to see what detailed examinations of other IPCC data reveal.

Monckton on Climategate Scandal

Lord Christopher Monckton speaks at the second International Climate Conference, addressing the Climategate scandal and key players involved in what appears to be one of the biggest science scams of our time. He dissects the conduct of UN scientists involved.

Lord Monckton on Climategate at the 2nd International Climate Conference from CFACT EUROPE on Vimeo.

This video runs for just over 30 minutes and is well worth watching. Monckton provides a concise and informative summary of the CRU scandal and examines terrestrial data manipulation and the changing of IPCC reports. One of the best video summaries of the Climategate I have seen to date.

Dr Bob Carter - IPCC Should Be Scrapped

Bob Carter lets the IPCC have it in a recent talk. Finally the ABC has published something from a sceptical scientist. They have a long way to go in that regard.

Here's what Bob had to say,

"Since the original leak in mid-November, which was not covered by the mainstream press, Climategate has surpassed 30 million hits on a Google search

The IPCC is the official UN body that has presided over this fiasco. It is an organisation that was specifically set up to provide advice to national governments (including Australia's) for their use in setting climate policy. The IPCC's incompetence is manifest in its failure to detect the corrupt science that has for so long permeated the activities of the international jetsetters of the climate science power group. The organisation should be closed down (without tears), and the Copenhagen COP-15 meeting would be a good place to start this process happening.

That the global warming scare should turn out to be precisely the scam that climate rationalists have been banging on about for years is shocking enough; many future PhD theses and books will undoubtedly be written about it. Yet it is but the tip of the iceberg so far as the public prostitution of science is concerned. Climategate being currently in full swing, the obvious question is when (not if) the parallel Reefgate, Murraygate and Fishgate scandals will erupt in Australia?

All Australians should contemplate deeply the questions that are raised by the global warming scandal, including the systemic corruption of science and the dereliction of duty by media news organisations that it reveals. Key questions include the following."

UN Propoganda - Opening Video to COP15

140 private jets fly in Copenhagen.
1,200 limos.
20,000 hypocrites....

Apparently the UN is claiming now that global warming causes earthquakes. Their propaganda obviously is causing little kids to have nightmares. Check out the COP15 junket's Opening Film. A more insulting and sickening piece of propaganda would be hard to find. No doubt it is all based on the science as re-invented and re-interpreted by the UN, the IPCC and their hanger’s on. How are your carbon footprints delegates? I hear that limo’s are in short supply at Copenhagen. If these guys have a chance in their busy agenda of saving the world I am hoping they can drop by and fix the potholes in my street before they get too carried away, if its not too much to ask. Watch the COP15 video but have something handy to vomit into just in case.

By the way that "15" after "COP" (Copenhagen) means it is the 15th massive 2 week foreign extravaganza of its kind. Others included Nairobi (Kenya), Poznan (Poland), Montreal (Canada), Buenos Aires (Argentina), and Milan in Italy.

Interesting isn't it that almost the whole video is a computer generated graphic - a model if you like. Not one fact in it to justify establishment of a world government and a taxing regime that will dwarf anything we have seen or even comprehended to date.
